In World War Two, there were many people fighting and risking their lives to secure the freedom of our country, among them, was a hero named John R. Fox. Fox was born May 18, 1915 in Cincinnati, Ohio and while he may be seen as a simple person, he was an extraordinary man who exhibited many characteristics that define a hero, such as courage, sacrifice, and patriotism.

On 26 Dec 1944, the Axis launched an offensive from the Serchio River in the Tuscan region of Italy with two Italian divisions and three German battalions. The US 92nd Infantry Division, which included Fox, fought against them with two Indian battalions called in by Allied leadership predicting that the Axis might attack in indirect support of the Battle of the Bulge, which was currently happening in Europe.

While his commander protested that there was a heavy barrage in the area and that bombardment would be too close, Lieutenant Fox called for artillery fire, even though his commander said that it would be on him. Fox gave the command to “Fire It! There's more of them than there are of us. Give them hell!" They gave their lives, which is the ultimate sacrifice in battle. This, in the end, contributed to a worthy cause because it inevitably delayed the advance of the germans.

Fox was an extraordinary man who exhibited many characteristics that define a hero, such as courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. He exhibited courage by going against his commanding officer, he exhibited patriotism by fighting against discrimination and serving his country, and last but not least, he exhibited sacrifice by risking his life and his party’s to slow the advancement of the enemy which greatly contributed to the cause of the Battle of
