John Scopes Biography
John Scopes was a famous teacher because of his role in the Scopes Trial. He starting teaching in 1924. He taught algebra, physics and chemistry at Rhea County Central High School in Dayton, Tennessee. Even though Scopes did not teach biology, he admitted that he had used a textbook that supported evolutionary ideas while substituting as the biology teacher. On July 10th 1925 Scopes was tried in the Rhea County Courthouse in Dayton, Tennessee.
John Butler Biography
John Butler was a state representative in Tennessee from 1923-1927. Butler was a Primitive Baptist believed that Darwinism would destroy belief in the Bible’s teaching. Clarence Darrow was a journalist and lawyer. He worked for many different defense counsels in several different dramatic trials. He defended John Scopes in the famous Scopes Trial. When he represented Scopes in 1925 he was one of the most famous lawyer. During the trial Darrow had put William Jennings Bryan on the stand and grilled him about Bible stories.
