Statesman and Philosopher, John Stuart Mill, in his autobiography , Ch. 5 A Crisis in My Mental History (1806-1873), argues that doubting your level of happiness will cause it to end. He supports his claim by first stating that those who are truly happy are focused on things other than their happiness, then he continues on to say that the only way to find happiness is to exhaust your every effort on your dreams and ambitions in life. Mill’s purpose is to share his philosophy in order to help people avoid the mental crisis he suffered through. He creates a pensive tone for a well-educated audience.
