In Rite of Passage, the main character, Johnny is put into an extreme situation, and although he does some questionable things, he is well intentioned, and overall a good person. Good, in no definition of the word, means perfect, and Johnny is definitely not perfect. Being good is defined by intentions and circumstances; people are defined by what they consistently do. After Johnny gets in a fight with Baldy, Baldy asks “‘Why don’t you just finish me off?’ ‘Why?’ Johnny asked, blinking. ‘I don’t want to kill anybody’”(pg. 82).
