Umberto Eco once said, “The real hero is always a hero by mistake; he dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else” (119). This is undoubtedly true and it is what enables normal people to inspire others without trying. Many heroic traits do not need to be sought out because humans possess them naturally. For example, my hero is a fifteen year old girl named Jordan Boyce. She does not mean to be a hero, but behaves in the only way she knows how to: as herself. She effortlessly accomplishes heroism every day through her compassion, patience, and perseverance. Every human being is capable of compassion, but there are some that are more inclined to caring behavior. Jordan is one of those people. Her most dominant feature is her smile. Just as Fred Korematsu fought for the wellbeing of others, Jordan shares her joy in life with all those around her. She takes the extra second to smile or say hello, a small action that can brighten any day. She goes out of her way to teach and support those around her, always with words of encouragement. To me, it is a necessary trait for any hero. My hero displays the most enduring patience I have ever experienced. She gives people what is often overlooked: time. Time to heal is the most precious gift she has ever given me. After all, if not given time to run the race, how can it be won? Jordan is very similar to Nancy Mairs because they are both incredibly patient. Instead of being patient with a disease, Jordan is patient with people. She does not give up on someone, even after it seems that all hope is lost for them. Instead, she stands by them, as close as they allow.
