In 1848, the creation of the Oregon Territory, sadly, would only last five years. The Pacific Northwest territory (present day Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Montana and Wyoming) would be divided by Congress on March 2, 1853. One of the most influential individuals who was responsible for reshaping and dividing the territory (creating the new Washington Territory), was Oregon’s territorial delegate, Joseph lane.
Receiving his Oregon Territory commission in 1848 (from President Polk), Joseph Lane impacted the region, by being instrumental in the division of the territory, with his agenda of achieving Oregon statehood, utilizing with the lower, southern area, of the Oregon Territory. Oregonians eagerness to manage their own government and define their new constitution, utilized Senator Joseph Lane, creating the bill for statehood, allowing Oregon to be part of the federal union.
Washington Territory existed from 1853-1889. The newly drawn boundaries would reorganize the region and alter its future within the United States. Journalist would write about the term “manifest destiny” and American’s duty to move westward.
