During the 1930s Stalin gained power over the USSR. In his beginning time as a leader, he ruled with two other people. They each had a particular role in the government. Vladimir Lenin was the overall leader where Trotsky ran the military as a General. As for Stalin, he was lower on the power scale and he was in charge of the job system. When he gained power, he tried to revolutionize the Soviet Union. Stalin’s totalitarian rule changed the agriculture, industries, and culture in the Soviet Union. Before Stalin came to power in the 1930s, the Soviet Union was not a very advanced country. The country was big in size making it hard to feed the vast majority of the people. The farmers lived in village communities which were known as serfs. (Dr. Board) These serfs were most likely very poverty stricken and even though they worked together, their framing methods were very traditional and outdated. The farming took a very long time to grow food and the supplies were limited. There were a few other serfs that were more successful, but these were far and few between. The agriculture was only slowly improving in the Soviet Union. When Stalin came to power in the1930s, he tried to revolutionize the peasantry.

There were many nationalities living in the Soviet Union at the time. The majority were Russians. There were many more vast nationalities in the Soviet Union because of its large size. Joseph Stalin was not satisfied with this great majority of people that had different nationalities and different beliefs. Joseph Stalin eliminated the ones who refused to be a part of his system by leaving their origin beliefs and customs behind. Many of the churches had closed, and very few were left open. Also, many of the religious leaders were executed or taken to labor camps or imprisoned. The Soviet Union government had pronounced religion as being a symbol of the capitalist
