When you think of a “hero,” what comes to mind? Do you see a strong buff man in a cape and patriotic colors? Do you envision a person who can fly and who has super-human strength? Many folks often picture their favorite comic book superhero. However, true heroism is marked by heroic traits and deeds. Furthermore, our heroes may be ordinary people who meet with extraordinary challenges and face them utilizing the heroic qualities within them. A hero is someone who improves the lives of others, who is courageous, and who never gives up no matter the circumstances.

A hero must be selfless. To utilize the act of selflessness, you must not be selfish or put others wants/needs before your own. Kyle Carpenter shows selflessness and many other

Perseverance is giving the effort required to do something no matter how hard the obstacles are to overcome. Josh Pitcher is a hero that exemplifies perseverance. He perseveres as his leg was ripped off during a military accident. He fell into some depression but didn't give up and pushed through the healing process. He didn't stop there, he trained and eventually got back in the army, even though he lost his leg. “A total of 1,564 soldiers or Marines have lost at least one leg, arm or hand in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to the Pentagon. Pitcher is one of a tiny minority — just 57 — who have returned to war zones.” showing how hard and how much effort it takes to do. Likewise, another heroic person that shows perseverance is Galileo Galilei. He exhibited perseverance by standing up for what he believed in, even when in doubt by almost everyone. He stood up against the church which resulted in him being under house arrest. Even then he went on discovering many theories to be true with his telescope and figuring out many things people did not know/believe about our universe. Bravery is the act of being bold or courageous in tough situations. A person that resembles bravery is Witold Pilecki. He showed this heroic act of bravery/courage by volunteering to go to Auschwitz, which is a concentration death camp during the Holocaust. He was a member of the resistance and did this to gather information about the camp. This shows bravery, selflessness and so much more heroic traits by him going to this death camp to help his country, the jews, and the enemies of Germany. Chernobyl Suicide Squad or Alexi Ananenko, Valeri Bezpoalov and Boris Baronov are another group of people that show bravery and many more heroic traits. “In 1986, a sudden surge of power during a reactor systems test destroyed Unit 4 of Chernobyl's nuclear power plant, spewing massive amounts of deadly radioactive material into the environment.” While this was happening a massive amount of radioactive material spilled into the cooling pipes and steam pipes. These 3 volunteers suited up and jumped into the radioactive material to drain it out knowing they would die. After they reached the surface they died shortly afterward, but without the actions of these brave individuals, the effect of the explosion would be an unfathomable disaster. These 3 heroes exemplified courage, selflessness, and bravery through their actions on that horrible day. These heroes are not cowards and anything but
