Joshua Chamberlin was a local hero in the eyes of Maine’s people and beyond. He served four terms as the governor of Maine in Augusta. He was also a volunteer in the civil war, including six other battles that he participated in throughout his career as a soldier. Joshua Chamberlain however, did not receive military training despite his brief time at a military school located in Ellsworth, Maine. Joshua did however, desire to serve his own country of the United States of America. Joshua was also a graduate of Bowdoin College in 1852. Joshua Chamberlain thereafter became the sixth president of Bowdoin college in Brunswick, Maine during the years following 1871 until his resignation. He is also best known for his courageous demeanor that he portrayed as colonel of the 20th Maine regiment, during the hard and heroically fought Battle of Gettysburg in the year 1863. At a young age Joshua’s father, Joshua Chamberlin, passed on a penetrating interest in the military. His father had commanded troops during the bloodless Aroostook War of 1839 with Canada, his grandfather had been locally prominent in the War of 1812, and his great-grandfathers had participated in the American Revolution. Ever so considerate, Chamberlain had his men salute the defeated Confederates as they marched by, evidence of his admiration of their determination and of Grant’s wish to encourage the rebel armies still in the field to accept the peace. Chamberlain’s exceptional work did not stop following his time as a solider in war, he continued with his teaching at Bowdoin College.
