The fast pacing throughout Enrique’s journey, as well as the short, sparsely detailed syntax and diction, bestows the reader with a sense of the fast pacing of the journey to the United States, as well as how quickly one can be shipped back to their starting point. The short syntax employed throughout the book, highlights the fast paced journey, the willpower to succeed, as well as the risks prevalent throughout, forcing a migrant to act fast, or otherwise be shipped back, or perhaps even be killed by a gang. In many cases, one quick, seemingly harmless decision can prove to be costly: “Five days and 150 miles into Mexico, he committed the mistake of falling asleep on top of a train with his shoes off” (Nazario 50). The quick pacing also contributes to the theme of resolve, strength, hope and courage. Through the many failures at attempting to get to the United States border, many will fail. Despite the many failures, many young boys, including Enrique, will continue venture through this journey again, each time coming a little bit closer to coming to the United States: “In spite of everything, Enrique has failed again--he will not reach the United States this time, either, He tells himself over and over that he’ll just have to try again” (Nazario 60). Enrique has been beaten down by the officials and police seven times, but he keeps trudging along, determined to succeed and try again until he physically and mentally cannot continue. Through the book, Sonia Nazario chooses purposeful decisions concerning diction and syntax, permitting the reader to understand the journey migrants take to the United States, the hardships that are faced during this perilous journey, and each and everyone one of them’s will to succeed and
