Often, movies are not able to capture the past exactly as it is. The movie, “A Knight’s Tale” is a great example of this assumption. The Elizabethan era was a time in which England was under the rule of Queen Elizabeth. Women and men dressed according to their social class. Sports such as jousting were prevalent in this period. The language used was also a very proper form of English with a frequent use of words such as ‘thine’. The movie, “A Knight's Tale” inaccurately portrays the aspects of jousting, clothing, and language of the Elizabethan era.
Jousting is a sport of the Elizabethan era in which two horsemen yielding lances with blunted tips charge at each other. Although the movie is precise in depicting the game itself, it shows a rather modernized version. In a scene at the beginning of the movie, the audience of the sport can be seen drinking and singing “We will rock you”. This song was released in the 1900s so it wouldn’t make sense for people portraying an earlier time period to be singing this song during the sport. Also,

During the Elizabethan era, clothing showed a difference in social status. Women of the upper class wore dresses with the most amount of layers while women of the lower classes had narrower dresses. This was not portrayed accurately either because Jocelyn who plays the role of a high-class woman is seen wearing dresses that are narrow. Although her dresses look more expensive than the peasants in the movie, she is often seen wearing a hat with a stylish dress that looks like it belongs not in the Elizabethan era but in the 21st century. Originally, the clothing of upper class women and men is pretty similar but in the movie, the men are seen in a blazer like over top with an undershirt and pants.
