Joyce Oates was born on June 16, 1938. She was raised in Lockport, New York. She developed a passion for writing and literature as a child. Oates received her first “type writer” as a teen and had moral support from her parents over her career. She wrote from her high school years and throughout college. Moreover, Joyce Oates was awarded a scholarship from Syracuse University and graduated with being number one in her class in 1960. She then attended the University of Wisconsin to earn her master’s degree in 1961. In addition, Oates taught at the University of Detroit. After the end of that year, she moved to work in Canada. She and her husband were co-editors for the “literary quarterly publication, ‘The Ontario Review.’” As years passed
