In literary works such as 1984 by George Orwell there are characters that are known as foils. Foils are the type of characters that posses attributes that emphasize particular qualities and characteristics of the main character. These traits apply to Julia and the main character, Winston, in 1984. Julia and Winston are very rebellious and get to be significant others, although they have the same rebellious ways they are both very distinctive in many ways. Julia is a young , enthusiastic, and a very appealing woman, while Winston is ten years older, delicate, and absolutely uncomprehensive. Through Julia and Winston's love for each other and other characteristics, they both take control in conveying the theme that everyone needs independence.
