In the novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian written by Sherman Alexie demonstrates an important relationship between Arnold Junior Spirit and his best friend Rowdy. Junior is an American-Indian teenager living in Wellpinit who goes through many hardships. His best friend Rowdy, who is aggressive and tough physically had the role of protecting Junior since they were young. This relationship is important because at the beginning they were best friends but their relationship gets challenged throughout the story and both characters go through different emotions. An example is when Junior says “I think Rowdy might be the most important person in my life”, this is important because it demonstrates that Junior thinks highly of their friendship, he recognises that Rowdy knows him better than anyone else and even though he is tough and sometimes bullies him. He also understands that Rowdy’s abusive home life has left him unable to express himself causing him to often resort to violence in emotional moments. This is important because despite their unlikely physical appearance, inside they are similar which gives them a special bond and shows that their relationship is invulnerable. Another example portraying the significance of their friendship is when Rowdy protects Junior when they went to the Powwow, “He also knew that he’d probably have to fight for me”. In this quote, it shows that Junior is weak physically but Rowdy was always there to protect him. On the other hand, Rowdy is also grateful because Junior protects him by offering a place for him to go apart from his dangerous house. Their friendship is important to both characters as they have a strong connection and are faithful towards each other.
