Immanuel Kant and Mill have different beliefs on how an individual can reach their greatest happiness. Immanuel Kant was a strong advocate from equal rights amongst all humans. I myself am also a strong supporter of not only equal rights amongst all humans however, equal means of opportunity for all humans as well. I strongly agree with Kant’s idea of the highest good being righteousness. Kant believes that if your motive behind doing something is self-interest then it is no good. The reason behind you doing a good gesture should be because you enjoy helping people, not because you want recognition, or praise. This is the unspoken law that should always be followed. I am perfectly fine with sacrificing some happiness to have the good will. Categorical imperative is the supreme moral principle. To act in favor of the good will does not depend on someone social economic status, everyone has the capacity to act in favor of the good will. In common language, it is saying that the law must be applied fairly to everyone. I am a strong supporter of everyone being held accountable for their actions whether rich or poor. The argument that Kant is making is that you must reflect on your everyday actions and see was it done out of self-advancement, or the good will. Immanuel Kant is proposing this notion that individuals obey the moral law, not out of fear, or selfishness but; because it just happens to be the right thing to do. I agree with the idea of doing a nice gesture with genuine intentions. If you are only donating to a charity because you can later write it off on your income tax, then your intentions are flawed and you don’t possess the good will because you are only performing acts of kindness for self-advancement.
