In 2008 NBC’s I-team disclosed that thousands of students were drinking lead-tainted drinking water at Los Angeles-area schools. Aging pipes made of lead, deposit toxic particles, exposing students to an excessive amount of lead. This leaves water fountain drinkers succebtable to lead poising, which can result in learning disabilities and physical illnesses. The investigation found that laud drinking fountains had up to 426 times the amount of lead deemed safe by the environmental protection agency. After the report was published laud swore to fixing the problem ; seven years later the I-team did a follow up report and found very little had changed. Kare 4 Cali is an environmental organization that promotes the health and wellbeing of California, with its focus on instilling knowledge. When describing the club, David says, “A lot of people know that there are problems going on but don't know what they can do or how they can improve the situation.” Though this is currently only the second year as an active club, they have already connected with a lot of the student body. In the beginning of the year the Club decided that they would sell 5$ aluminum Kare4Cali re-usable water bottles and all the profits would go back into the school. The club intends on having the money raised be used to purchase water filters for the fountains and help fund machines to refill the reusable bottles. Besides this business venture the organization also participates in envionrmental clean ups and is very active in its community and has begun branching out the Kare4Cali name to other school campuses.
