True Love’s Flaw Everyone likes to believe love is blind and it does not see race or gender. But in reality, everyone sees what they are raised to see. In the short story by Kate Chopin, Armand did not prevent Desiree from leaving with their child and then began to scorch all of their belongings. He also showed no emotion when his wife killed herself and their son as well. True love should not be discarded for something as simple as the color of one’s skin or heritage. Love needs to be precious no matter the difficulties that appear until death do they part. It may have begun as true love, as soon as their newborn baby came out quadrooon, Armand fell out of love with Desiree just as quickly as he fell in love with her. As a young child, her family found Desiree outside their gates and adopted her. Due to her being adopted, her true background had never been revealed. He was willing to completely erase her from his life by burning her things just so he did not have to remember he slept with a woman of African ancestry. In the end though, it was Armand that had the African ancestry and he realized that he let the supposed love his life kill herself and his biological child. He essentially became what he hated the most and in a sense was being punished for his treatment of his wife. True love is not something that goes away; it’s an all-consuming feeling that doesn’t see color, gender, or heritage. It became easy for Armand to begin hating Desiree for something she had no control over and since the hate was so easy, it is safe to assume that he never had feelings for her to begin with but married her due to her being and intriguing young beautiful woman. Love is blind, but sometimes you cannot help how you grow up or the time period you grow up
