Katherine G Johnson was born in 1918 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. She was very smart from an early age and her father encouraged her to learn and continue her education. Since the town that she lived in didn’t have classes that African-American children could take she when to school in Institute, West Virginia where her family and her had to move so that she could continue her education. For Johnson school was a relatively easy since she loved to learn. At the age of ten she started high school and at the age of 15 she started to attend college. Johnson went on to graduate from West Virginia State College at the age of 18 with a degree in both mathematics and French. She went on to have a thirty-three year long career at NASA contributing to other missions and working in different programs at NASA. Those programs include working on the Space Shuttle program, the Earth Resources satellite, and even worked on plans for a mission to Mars. Johnson retired from NASA in 1986. Johnson was a mathematician if we specify her field of study and while she didn’t contribute huge findings and research she still accomplished a lot. Johnson contributed a lot to society and NASA. “Her legacy includes an extraordinary social impact as a pioneer in space science and computing,” Johnson played an important role at NASA and if it hadn’t been for her work, who knows when NASA would have sent a man to space. She has contributed to the scientific progress in her field by helping the first American man get into space with her calculations.
