In the movie “Hidden Figures”, history was made for black women. This event occurred way before I was thought of, and yet it has one of the greatest impacts on my life as of today. Hidden Figures took place in 1961 in Hampton, Virginia, when segregation continued equally concerning race as well as gender. This movie really had an impact on me because I am a black women and my favorite subject just so happens to be math. It showed me that no matter how hard it gets, if you push through it, you’ll reach your goal. Katherine Johnson is one of the main characters in the movie and in my opinion showed the most courage, numerous of times; and because she showed courage, she alone started to make a change to the black community. Dorothy wanted so badly to be the next supervisor seeing how she was doing the job of a supervisor but didn’t have the title nor the pay of a supervisor. Vivian Michael constantly reminded Dorothy that a colored woman supervisor was unheard of, every time Dorothy would attempt to mention it. But of course she didn’t give up. NASA bought a machine that would be able to do at least 24,000 math problems per second, leaving all the black women in the west campus computer room out of jobs. Dorothy didn’t look at this machine as something that replaced her and the other 30 black women, but instead looked at it as another job waiting for her and the rest of the black women to come. Dorothy knew that this machine would have to be programed in-order for it to do what it was meant for. Dorothy took it upon herself to learn how how to program this machine, and once she figured out how to do so, she taught the other black women to do so as well. Eventually Dorothy got caught messing with the machine, but was caught at the right time because the machine started work and project numbers. Something two white men with the best education could not do. At the end of the day not only did she save herself and the rest of the black women from unemployment, but she also got the supervisor position she
