Imagine doing your everyday routine while somebody aggressive and mean is constantly pushing you, calling you names, and teasing you for every little action, no matter what you are doing. For a large percentage of kids in school, this is a normal daily experience, if people knew half of what goes on for these victims being bullied and just how big of a problem bullying is, they’d be mortified. We will be talking about creating a plan for this school to not only understand, but also teach ways to ultimately fix the bullying problem plaguing a variety of kids in school districts. My source of information for this plan is from Kathleen Vail’s article “Words that wound”. As Vail explains in her article “Words That Wound”, “Every day, 160,000 children stay home from school because they are afraid of being bullied” (1). It’s obvious just how widespread this problem is, but what is even more shocking is, from surveying middle school and junior high schools, Vail gathered information from the survey which showed “Nearly 77 percent of the students reported they’d been victims of bullying at school – 14% say they’d experienced severe reactions to the abuse” (1). Keep in mind these are just the number of people that were brave enough to come forward about their situation, not counting the tens of thousands of others that chose not to speak up about it. Kids stay home due to bullying, but you may be wondering, why exactly are they staying home? What is physically or mentally happening to them when they are being “bullied” to cause them to stay home? We will now be talking about what exactly is being done by the bullies to harm the victims and understand what the victim goes through when being
