“Sixty seconds. That’s how long we’re required to stand on our metal circles before the sound of a gong releases us. Step off before the minute is up, and the land mines blow your legs off,” (Collins, pg 148). The Hunger Games are games that the Capitol sets up for their workers to participate in to have the distinct chance to be rich. During these games, each person that is picked has to kill one another until there is only one left alive. In the book, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, is a dynamic character that changes over the time period of this book. During the games, right before Katniss was going to go to sleep next to Peeta, she started to wonder about her friend, Gale, and if he would want to be in a relationship with her. She always insisted that they were just friends, but know, she was wondering if Gale would want to become more. This is showing a change in Katniss, because ever since Katniss joined the games, she has been changing. “Gale’s not my boyfriend, but would he be, if I opened that door?” (page 280). This is after the Capitol was involved with Katniss; meaning, that the Capitol is messing with Katniss and her emotions. Before they had gotten involved with her, she never considered her and Gale to be in a relationship, but since she had dealt with the people in charge, she was changing. As you can see, Katniss is changing a lot, and this is not necessarily a good thing. Meaning, Katniss needs to change in her own ways, not other ways that the Capitol wants her to. Another time that Katniss had wondered the same thing was on page 112, when she was at the Capitol, and thinking about Gale. She was remembering their memories together, and she started thinking, “Does he miss me?” This is showing again, Katniss was changing how she feels about Gale.
