The theme of this book, is that you need to fight for what you want and believe is best for the people you love. Katniss shows this when she says to Haymitch, “‘Please, Haymitch!’ I’m begging now. ‘I have to do something. I can’t just sit here waiting to hear if they died. There must be something I can do!’” (pg.167)

This quote represents the theme. Katniss doesn’t want to sit back and hope that Gale, her best friend, isn’t killed saving Peeta, her love, and other tributes from the capitol. She wants to help Gale and the others rescue the tributes. Katniss needs them in her life. She would no doubt give her life to protect them. The picture of the mockingjay pin was a gift from Madge before Katniss entered the arena at her first hunger games. It reminds her of all the people who the capitol have killed. Madge and her family are among those. The tributes in all of the 75 Hunger Games are included too. Because of that reminder, she wants revenge. Katniss wants to end the Hunger Games. So she wants to fight for that.

In this quote, Katniss takes a risk and shoots President Coin, instead of President Snow. She was there for her arranged assasination of President Snow. She is brave enough, and bold enough to shoot her. Katniss Everdeen knows that Coin would not have been a good leader. Katniss wanted freedom, which she knew that Coin was not going to give her. Katniss needed to protect her family and lead the district's down a good path.
