The sounds of clicking keys and frustrated sighs fill the room as twenty-five seniors wrack their brains for ideas and peck at their keyboards, typing and backspacing. Many of us will compete for the same scholarships, and there are several good contenders, right? It’s a race, a competition, with each student struggling to rise above the rest and be the “victor.” Is this senior year or the Hunger Games?
Now that I consider it, the same qualities can be applied to the question “Why am I a good investment?” as they can to the actual Games in the literary world. Katniss won the Hunger Games partially because others believed in her and invested their money and resources into her future. However, it was more than others investing in her; Katniss invested in other tributes. She cared about the people around her, which is a quality I relate to. In the summer of 2013, I went on a missions trip to Eden, Jamaica. While there I was able to assist in the construction of a school for the deaf, helping towards a common goal for many of the people there.

Katniss wouldn’t have survived had it not been for her leadership skills, and though my situation is not life and death, it remains a necessary quality. After holding a few positions in school-wide organizations, I craved a taste of leadership on a larger scale. In 2013, I obtained a position on the officer team of the Colorado Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter. Holding the particular office I did meant that I would plan a conference for over 500 students in the northeast corner of the state, as well as help the other fourteen officers coordinate a state conference for the 2500 students that attend each year. My confidence as a leader has drastically improved over the last couple of years, and today I am comfortable speaking on a stage in front of thousands of FBLA
