“The VMware strategy is to help customers achieve cloud-like efficiency and operational improvements across the major IT infrastructure investment areas” (Steve Herrod, 2010). To date this strategy has involved products and services targeting complexity in datacenter infrastructure (e.g. VMware vSphere™ and VMware vCenter™ Server), desktops (e.g. VMware View™ and VMware Fusion®), and application development (e.g. SpringSource, VMware Lab Manager, and VMware Workstation). With this, Zimbra, …show more content…
These trends are converging and when combined are profoundly influencing the direction of end-user computing.
User expectations of their business computing environments are changing, being driven by their experiences as consumers. New state of the art devices and user interfaces, cloud computing and the associated SaaS-based applications, ubiquitous connectivity. These trends are converging and when combined are profoundly influencing the direction of end-user computing. What are some of the traits of this consumer cloud experience? (VMware, 2010) 1. A better user experience - simplicity; 2. Instant gratification, multiple devices; 3. Always available - my apps and data are backed up, replicated or synched; 4. Ubiquitous access; 5. Personalized - small, engaging applications (at least the client part is small); 6. Pay as you go; 7. Excitement and anticipation for the next great device or application.
With the significant advances in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) over the last half century, there is an increasingly perceived vision that computing will one day be the 5th utility (after water, electricity, gas, and telephony). This computing utility, like all other four existing utilities, will provide the basic level of computing service that is considered essential to meet the everyday needs of the general community.
