In the midst of the Cold War, a serious threat was discovered that could cost not only the lives of many U.S. citizens, but possibly invoke a nuclear war. Nuclear missiles were photographed being assembled in Cuba, an ally of the Soviet Union, by an American spy plane. Information was immediately brought to U.S. President Kennedy who immediately assembled together a team of his fifteen most trusted advisors as well as his brother, attorney general Robert Kennedy. “We have some big trouble,” the president is quoted to have told his brother. Rewind back to 1959, Fidel Castro became the dictator of Cuba during the socialist revolution of 1959. This was two years after Kennedy became president. Since then, Cuba had been a problem for Kennedy within the first year of his administration due to its Soviet-like government. The CIA soon forms a plan, approved by Kennedy, to invade Cuba and start an uprising among the people and overthrow their dictator Castro. The Soviets and Cuba did not even know that the U.S. knew about the missiles. President Kennedy used this time to meet with his group of advisors. After the week was up, Kennedy made a national television announcement about the missiles. He also announced his decision to “quarantine” Cuba using the Navy so that no more weapons could be shipped in by the Soviets. This seemed to work as many Soviet ships were forced to turn around as the U.S. Navy was surrounding Cuba. Even now the Soviets insisted that the weapons were merely defensive weapons to keep the U.S. from invading. Even still, the construction of the sites of the missiles continued being built at alarming rate.
