Sociocultural environment
Sociocultural environment includes the values, beliefs and societal expectation. For Kerri Morgan the sociocultural environment both positively and negatively impacts her performance in meaningful occupations. A societal belief that has slowly progressed is the right for individuals with a disability to live independently. In 1960 the Independent Living Movement formed and their focus included the right for independence, the ability and opportunity to make choices and minimizing the dependence of others (CITE). Due to endless advocacy efforts, steps have been taken in order to promote independence for individuals with a disability. The legislation positively impacted Kerri, for the reason that she lives independently.

Within the media disabilities are portrayed within four different rhetoric: wondrous, sentimental, exotic and realism (Thomas, 2001). Within each rhetoric there are predisposed views on the person who has a disability, along with a stance of the observer. The rhetoric often misguides the viewer by causing them to believe the individual is a victim and that they need help or social support (CITE). As a result, people expresses sympathy or place the individuals on a pedestal (Thomas, 2001). In either case it causes individuals to underestimate the capacities of the individuals with a disability. Therefore, if a stranger meet Kerri, they may not believe that she is an elite competitive athlete. Paralympics means that the competition and level of play is parallel to the Olympics, but this understanding may be clouded by predisposed views of helplessness and sympathy for individuals with disabilities. Kerri’s primary physical environments include her home, place of work, gym and the St. Louis city. Kerri works at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Her classes are held in the school of medicine, which is a recently built building and it is accessible. Due to the accessible building, Kerri’s performance in the occupation of teaching is positively impacted. Kerri attended college at Texas Christian University, and during her time there she stated that the university built her ramps in order to access academic buildings (K. Morgan, personal communication, 2017, March 8th). The adapted physical environment increased her performance in the occupation of
