Kevin Wendell Crum is a patient who may go by many different names based on his personality at that particular moment. Kevin has identified twenty-three completely different personalities. He may be Barry, Hedwig, Dennis, Patricia, Jade, or Orville, or any of the seventeen other names he associates with each different personality he portrays. Kevin’s variety of personalities can take the light from each other. Once a personality takes the light, it comes into the conscious and the others wait to take the light and emerge from the subconscious. Kevin acts differently with each personality. In the movie Split, when Dennis was in the light he showed his OCD by turning the bowl of chocolates on the desk to make sure it was straight. Kevin would visibly switch identities in the movie and even change his clothes to match the personality in the light. When Barry took the light, Kevin would talk about his clothing drawings and how inspired he was by them. Stress can trigger a switch in personalities but the disorder itself is mainly caused by past traumas or mental, physical, or sexual abuse. In the movie Split, Kevin was abused as a child and developed twenty-three different personalities to attempt to separate himself from these stressful situations. Hedwig is a symbol of Kevin’s innocence as a child. Hedwig is always afraid to get into trouble and is afraid to upset others. This may be because Kevin was abused by his mother if he made a mess as a child. Patricia is a nun and may suggest that Kevin was raised in an orphanage while growing up. Each different personality has an origin and a purpose. They all protect Kevin and are escapes from stressful situations that may bring back these traumatic
