Kevin Winslow's Character From 'The Clothes Liar'

Shades of McIntyre Grey:

“Things are not so simple always as black and white” (Brainy Quote). Kevin Winslow is

the main character in The McIntyre Liar written by David Bly who begins to see the shades of

grey. For years Kevin has been a troublesome kid, but that all changed after he was sent to work

at the McIntyre Ranch for the summer. Kevin Winslow, originally an immature teenager, through

his summer experiences becomes a mature man.

When the reader first meets Kevin, Kevin is an immature teenager. On page 8, Kevin

complains, “I’d wreck the car? It wasn’t like it was really my fault - that idiot was driving too

slow, wasn't he?” Through this quote Kevin was trying to redeem himself because Kevin made a

Also, Kevin

learns that Little Swede survived World War II. As well as that, Big Swede is battling cancer and

many more stories. Learning about life makes Kevin see the shades of grey. Because of Kevin’s

experience at the Ranch Kevin sees the real picture of life which changes Kevin into a pleasant,

responsible and thankful person.

By the end of the novel, Kevin is a mature young adult because now Kevin can see the

shades of grey. For example, Kevin explained, “Being alone, Mitc, is walking down a crowded

street and not seeing anyone you know or care about” (109). Kevin now understands the

importance of relationships, responsibilities and how hard life can be. Before Kevin thought he

doesn't really care about his parents, but Kevin now understands how much Kevin misses his

family. The Ranch experiences brought the real Kevin out instead of the immature teenager.

Also, Kevin now have seen life from a different perspective and that has evolved Kevin into a

mature young adult.

In the final analysis, Kevin has always been a troublemaker, but Kevin’s McIntyre

experiences forced Kevin to see the shades of grey of life and become a mature young
