The Democratic Party was important because of their idea of squatter sovereignty which would cause much conflict for America in the future. It angered the North and many abolitionists because it allowed for further expansion of slavery. It would also lead to many lives being lost in Kansas where pro and anti-slavery advocates were sending people to vote for Kansas being a free or slave states. Both sides would turn to violence and by then end of the conflict over 200 lives were lost.
3. The Mexican American War had a variety of causes. When James K. Polk acquired Texas, it only increased his appetite for more of the Mexican land. Polk wanted to expand into other Mexican territories such as California but Mexico was not willing to hold any diplomatic talks. Mexico “fell for the bait” and fired at the American troops, which led Congress to vote for war against Mexico As they had spilled American blood on US territory even though the land the troops were on was disputed land. Another cause of the war, was that America knew that Britain and France wanted some of the land out West and therefore wanted to take the land from Mexico which they felt would be easier than having to fight the British. The American want for land and their encroachment of disputed territory as well as the recent US annexation of Texas were major causes of the Mexican American War.
