Interfaith dialogue is the Uniting Church values relationships with people of other faiths and cultures and insists the place of interfaith dialogue in creating and sustaining a culture of peace and harmony. Interfaith dialogue occurs across a range of different levels. In 1996 Pope John Paul II held an interfaith prayer service in the Domain in Sydney. In 2001 churches, synagogues and mosques in Sydney held reciprocal visits to pray for peace and express unity. Islam, Judaism and Christianity all involve in the interfaith dialogue. Islam talks about jihad, Judaism about Zionism and Christianity about trinity.
Other ways of referring to the Trinity are the Triune God and the Three-in-One. The Trinity is a controversial doctrine; many Christians admit they don't understand it, while many more Christians don't understand it but think they do. In fact, although they'd be horrified to hear it, many Christians sometimes behave as if they believe in three Gods and at other times as if they believe in one. Trinity Sunday, which falls on the first Sunday after Pentecost, is one of the few feasts in the Christian calendar that celebrate a doctrine rather than an event. Trinity is important because it is the best synthesis of all biblical data on the nature of God. All other views deny or ignore major swaths of Scripture. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. Gospel of Matthew 28:19-20. The columban centre for Christians- Muslim dialogue is centred in Turramurra Sydney. Most of the centre’s work has been in enabling dialogue between Christians Muslims, particularly among women. The trinity was important to the Christians.
There is undoubtedly considerable ambivalence about interfaith dialogue both within Jewish tradition and amongst Jews today. We are torn between welcoming the possibilities of building better relationships with all peoples and faiths and an anxiety about what the effect will be upon us, and indeed upon our very survival as a unique people with a unique perception of God.
