The Death of King Arthur and Avalon High are two great examples of how the King Arthur legend over time. In The Death of King Arthur, Armitage describes how King Arthur is portrayed as rude, feared by the people, and tough because some of it is set in Rome, whereas Avalon High takes place in a high school and “King Arthur” is actually a sweet female teenager who likes to protect everyone. The legend of King Arthur changed over time due to the different settings of the stories. In The Death of King Arthur, Armitage does not focus on King Arthur’s search for the holy grail and how nice he was. In this poem, it describes King Arthur’s trip to Rome. King Arthur is described as strong leader and feared by the people. The emperor of Rome gets word of King Arthur’s visit, and he tells his men to tell King Arthur he has to bow down to him. Allie is new to Avalon High School, and she meets Will, Jenn, and Lance, who are the popular kids at school. She walks into history class and meets a boy named Miles, and he is portrayed as Merlin. Allie does not know that she is King Arthur because she thinks Will is King Arthur because he has an “evil” step-brother named Marco, who they think is Mordred. In this book, it shows the supposedly King Arthur, Will, his girlfriend, Jenn, and best friend, Lance, and it shows the love triangle between Will and Jenn and Lance and Jenn. Allie as the young naive girl she is tries to “protect” Will from Marco because Marco wanted to crush Will by telling him about Jenn and Lance. The reason why the legend of King Arthur changed over time with this two stories is because of the unique settings King Arthur was placed in Rome for a short period of time and in a high school two completely different settings.
