Archetypes can be found throughout literature. An archetype can be defined as “ a thought pattern that finds worldwide parallels, either in cultures ... or in individuals…” ("archetype"). This paper will compare and contrast two archetypal heroes from the 1976 book The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights by John Steinbeck. The two heroes are King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. While these two men differ in social status and the receiving of their nobility, they share archetypal traits such as being noble, loving the same beautiful lady, and other heroic characteristics (Weber 151). Sir Lancelot and King Arthur were both loved by everyone, because they were the best at what they did. Arthur was considered to be a great king, his kingdom loved him. Arthur was loved because of his strength, in some stories he pulls a sword from a stone and in others he is given the sword by the Lady of the Lake. Arthur proved himself to be a fair and just ruler of the kingdoms he overtook. Because of his fair ruling, knights and kings would come to his kingdom Was to serve him. Lancelot was loved just as King Arthur was, but for a differing reason. Lancelot was King Arthur’s champion, he went on quests and fought Arthur’s challengers. King Arthur unified his kingdom and restored peace among his people, the claim of his kingdom also starts many wars. He is brave and courageous when going to war, and always does what is honorable, even if he knows it could be his downfall. King Arthur also follows the chivalric code he has set for his knights. Like King Arthur, Sir Lancelot follows the chivalric code. Lancelot proves he is a hero when Sir Melliagaunce capture’s Gwenevere. Lancelot goes after Gwenevere and is nice enough to spare Melliaguance’s life.(le morte d'arthur) Sir Lancelot and King Arthur both have heroic qualities, similarly both Lancelot and Arthur were
