Synthesis Essay: Mature Arthur
In the comparison between the medieval source, The Death of King Arthur, and the modern source, Avalon High, the greatest changes in both legends is the setting, how Arthur’s character changes because of it, and the moral beliefs of how a true leader should be based off Arthur’s change of character. The Death of King Arthur is a medieval source, therefore, it’s based in the Middle Ages. The poet of The Death of King Arthur portrays King Arthur as a fearful and powerful king, for when the emperor of Rome, Emperor Lucius, sends his men to tell King Arthur to bow down to him, the poet describes Arthur’s reaction by saying that Arthur’s “face became flushed with the fire of fury / till he looked like a lion, and he bit his lip” (118-120). Because of King Arthur’s fearsome reaction, it shows his strength by striking terror in his enemies, for the poet said “and those Romans fell to the floor in fear, / appalled by his expression, expecting the end.

Allie is kind, understanding, and keeps her temper in check. When Marco, the character that Allie assumes is Mordred, confronts her and teases her of how she also surrounds herself with her friends instead of taking her enemies head on, she says “I need them to stop me from doing something that I’ll regret” (Avalon High). Allie’s statement shows her will to control her temper, which also reflects on the belief of what an ideal leader should be in a modern society. Because most citizens in a modern society are civilized, we look for a civilized, calm, and collected leader instead of just a feared one. Another modern belief that Avalon High reflects is that most people in a modern society wants to see the hero win and defeat his enemy. In Avalon High, Allie finds out that the reincarnation of Mordred is not Marco, but Mr. Moore, one of her teachers at her school. Allie defeats Mr. Moore without getting herself injured or
