Everyone strives to please the people around them, whether the desire is big or small it’s something we all have in common. The characters Amir and Sandra, from The Kite Runner and Only Daughter share this trait as well. In response to their negative relationships with their fathers, Amir and Sandra dedicate themselves towards making them proud, eventually doing just that. In response to the negative relationship she had with her father, Sandra began to dedicate her actions towards making their fathers proud. Sandra, for example, became a writer with all of her writings existing in order to, “win his approval” (Cisneros, 1). Sandra has stated beforehand that her father has never really been truly proud of her. She went to college in order to make her father proud, but somehow ended up disappointing him. In Only Daughter, Sandra made her father proud by writing a book that appealed to her father’s interests, so much so that he asked, “’where can we get more copies of this for our relatives” (Cisneros, 2). Sandra has spent her entire life trying to make her father proud, and usually he would not be interested in her efforts. Now however, Sandra has written something that appeals to her father’s interests, and in a way pays homage to his life which has made him both happy for her and proud of her. In The Kite Runner, Amir also makes his father proud by winning the kite-fighting tournament, his father was so proud that he actually, “held me [Amir] close to him [Baba], rocking me back and forth“(Hosseini, 79). Amir had always wanted his father to be proud of him, to show that he loved and cared for him. Now, Amir has won the kite-fighting tournament and is following in his father’s footsteps, this makes his father happy and so proud that he actually hugs Amir. Overall, both Amir and Sandra have made their fathers proud
