If knights and samurai ever fought, who do you think would win? While knights and samurai have many similarities, in a one on one battle, the advantage would be to the samurai and this can be seen in armor, training, and a code of honor. The first way that samurais have an advantage is armor. In document D written in the packet it says that the samurai armor was tough and was made of iron scales tied with silk or leather. This means that samurai could take more hits or shots because it could withstand them. Another piece of evidence that supports my claim is also in document D in the packet, it says that knight's’ armor was 40 to 60 pounds. You can infer that the knights couldn’t really flee or escape from battle if they were losing. A disadvantage for the samurai though was that they didn’t wear armor on their right arm, but something good about this was that they could draw their weapon faster. The battle would also be affected by training. The second area that samurais would have an advantage in is training. One piece of evidence I have for this statement is in document C1 by PBS, it talks about how the children studied kendo, the moral code of the samurai, and zen buddhism. My first evidence is found in document E by Yamaga Soko and it says “...in deepening his fidelity [loyalty] in associations with friends and… in devoting himself to duty above all.” Based on my understanding, I think this means that they put duties above all and took it seriously and if killing the knight was their duty, they would stop at nothing but death. It also says in document E by Yamaga that the knights must not fight for worldly gain and that they must give mercy to those who ask.
