In the article “Kremlin strikes back: Russian dissident artist ordered to psychiatric clinic” by writer Mansur Mirovalev, the thirty one year old artist Pyotr Pavlensky has been committed to a psychiatric clinic due to his ways of body art. According to Maria Alyokhina from the band “Pussy Riot”, Pavlensky is the first artist to be forced to the clinic ever since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The artist has been seen protesting police brutality by nailing his privates to the pavement of Moscow’s Red Square. He also sewed his mouth shut in order to support the rock group “Pussy Riot”. A good example would be the rock group “Pussy Riot”. The band was arrested a few years back after making fun of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Jail time is not the only bad thing that could happen. People have been shot on sight for speaking out in a negative way. When Russia was the Soviet Union, during most of the 20th century, they lived under an authoritarian rule. Meaning that people’s freedoms were very limited. So, speaking ill against the President would definitely get you killed. Another good example would be the assassination of politician Boris Nemtsov. Nemtsov was made famous when he was shot in plain sight on a bridge back in February of 2015. People like Nemtsov and Pavlensky have expressed their opinions on something or someone only to suffer a negative consequence for it. When Russia broke from the Soviet in the early 1990’s, the people’s freedom were more open. One thing that has not changed is their freedom of speech towards the President. Even if Russia is not considered a communist country anymore, people who live there need to keep their mouths shut or face the consequences. The actions towards ill speaking do not have to be verbal. Like Pavlensky, there have most likely been Putin protesters who have spoken out in a psychical
