: The character Stephen Kumalo is an elderly Zulu priest who has spent all his life in the village of Nodtshen. “I have learned that kindness and love can pay for pain and suffering [….]so in my suffering I can believe” (Paton pg. 212). In the beginning of the novel Kumalo was unexperienced, faithful, and naïve in the way Jonesburg worked, he saw everything black and white. Kumalo knew there was sorrows in life, however he would have never thought that his faith would be shaken with the amount of trouble thrown in his path.
