Distillation: Separation and Purification of Organic Liquids
-Distillation of Hexane:
1. Set up the distillation apparatus by obtaining 2 ring stands, a round bottom flask, a thermometer, a condenser, and graduated receiver. Assemble like the picture below:

2. Make sure that the thermometer bulb is placed right below the side arm so it can measure the temperature of the vapor as the vapor moves out of the flask into the condenser.
3. Put 15mL of hexane into the round bottom flask.
4. Add a boiling stone and then put the thermometer into place.
5. Start the water circulating through the condenser.
6. Place a heating mantle under the round bottom flask. Start heating the flask by turning on the mantle. Heat the hexane gradually until it boils.
7. Once the hexane begins to drop into the receiver, adjust the heat so the drops will come slowly and steadily. (approximately one drop per second)
8. Record the temperature when you collect 1,3,5,7,9 and 11 mL of the distillate.
9. Once this is complete, you can stop the distillation. The temperature you recorded should not have a difference of more than 2°C and should represent the boiling point range of hexane.
-Separation of a binary Mixture by Simple Distillation:
1. Use the same set up as the distillation of hexane.
2. Add 10mL of hexane and 10mL of toluene into the round bottom flask
3. Have everything set up as in the previous experiment.
4. Adjust the heat accordingly to get a slow and steady drip to
