1.Objective-Our goal for this experiment is to perform thin layer and column chromatography. What chromatography does is separate colored mixtures of substances.

2.Introduction- We most understand how to do both types of Chromatography. In thin layer chromatography the plate is the stationary phase and the movement phase is the Toluene. In column chromatography a packed column is the stationary phase and the movement phase is the ethanol and water. Also one equation that we will be using is r1=D1/Ds.

3.List of materials and Safety Precautions
-Capillary Tube
-Column
-Glass pipets
-Development Chamber
-TLC sheets
-Solvents
-Dye mixture
-Test-tubes and rack
-Ring stand with clamp
-Cotton

Safety Precautions
One thing to make sure is that all the equipment your using is clean. Also when dealing with liquids and powdered chemicals to make sure you handle them with caution. Make sure not to spill and of those

8ml of the solvent toluene is placed in the development chamber. Next a TLC plate must be obtained and carefully handled by it's side. Now apply a small dot of dye to the plate, about 1/2 inch from the bottom. Once the dot of dye is dried, place the plate inside the chamber and wait until the color reaches about 1/4 in from the top.Once finished you need a ruler to find the distance by using the formula r1=D1/Ds Next column chromatography must be performed. What is needed is a small piece of cotton to be placed inside a pipet. Now the pipet mud be placed on a ring stand and make sure to also have three test tubes and a rack. Place alumina inside the pipet about 3/4 of the way. Now make sure that the test tube is under the pipet and then put ethanol . Once it starts dripping keep filling it up with water so that it doesn't get to low. The goal is to have two different colors.FInal step is to find the distance which required you ti use the formula
