Purpose:
The purpose of this lab was to examine the effects of lactate fermentation when a clothespin is rapidly squeezed between the thumb and the index finger.
Hypothesis:
If the clothespin is rapidly squeezed between the thumb and the index finger for ten thirty-second intervals, then the amount of squeezes per interval will decrease as the experiment progresses. This is because of the buildup of lactic acid in the muscle, which leads to muscle fatigue.
2. There was a decrease of “strength” as the experiment progressed. This is due to the lack of oxygen being supplied to the muscles in use in each trial. With each trial, the amount of oxygen that is available is decreasing. This forces the muscle cells to resort to using lactate fermentation. Lactic acid is the product of lactate fermentation. The lactic acid would keep building up to the point of lactate threshold, where the lactic acid cannot be transported out to the liver fast enough. This would cause muscle fatigue, and would result in less squeezes as the trials progressed.
3. Ways that a person could improve their effectiveness of cellular respiration is to exercise regularly. Exercising regularly increases the person’s lactate threshold resulting in longer periods of time before muscle fatigue kicks in. Another way is to take frequent deep breaths in-between

To examine this relationship, a clothespin was placed between the thumb and index finger, and continuously pressed for 10 thirty-second intervals with no rest using each hand. The results showed a decrease in the number of squeezes from the start of the experiment. When the lactate threshold was reaches, the buildup of lactate led to muscle fatigue, therefore generating less amounts of squeezes per trial. The results supported the hypothesis as performance degraded as the trials
