LaDonna Harris was born on February 26, 1931, into a family of five children and her parents William Crawford and Lilly Tabbytite. After three months LaDonna’s maternal grandparents were forced to adopt her or she would be put up for adoption. In 1936, at the age of 5 she began her education at Temple Elementary School, her class consisted of about 10 kids throughout the course of her elementary education. She graduated 8th grade in 1945, and then she was anxious to begin high school. At the High School LaDonna was very successful finishing her high school education at the top of her class of 70 with 4.0 GPA. She then had to decide if she was going to continue her education, if so where? LaDonna graduated from a class of about 2,300 students and finished in the top 15. After graduation LaDonna got married to former Oklahoma Senator Fred Harris. Fred and LaDonna now have three kids: Kathryn Harris, Byron Harris, and Laura Harris. In the 1960s Harris, as the wife of a United States Senator, lived in Washington, D.C. and was in constant social and political contact with the top levels of the Democratic Party, up to and including President Lyndon B. Johnson and the First Lady. At the same time, her daughter Kathryn - at the time a university student - was deeply involved in the Anti war movement opposing the Vietnam War, which was conducted by the same President Johnson.
