Lake Powell-Personal Narrative

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been going to a place called Lake Powell. From Westminster, Colorado it is about an eight hour drive. This doesn’t include the frequent stops for gas, bathroom breaks, and food. Just like any family vacation, there are problems along the way. In the 15 years I’ve been going, we’ve experienced everything from needing new brakes, having four hour delays, to running out of gas in the middle of nowhere. If we ever do make it there, we have to load up the Houseboat, transfer everything we brought, including food, drinks, fishing supplies, boating equipment, and all of our clothes. This process is more difficult than it sounds. Hauling all of that equipment down a hill, across a bridge, and onto a dock takes a lot of time, not to mention it is typically almost a 100 degrees mid day. Once all the hard work is finished, the fun begins. Our family gathers up on the houseboat and departs from the marina. Leaving behind the real world.

After week of living on a boat, in the middle of a lake, most people are ready to go home. However, if I could stay for longer I would. The trip ends how it began, unloading everything and packing up the cars. Everyone says their goodbye’s, red as tomatoes, after being in the sun all week. Tired and cranky are most people on that last day, with an eight hour drive ahead of them. About 30 minutes in everyone is already asleep in the car, and before you know it you’re home. There’s not a lot at Lake Powell, no bathrooms, no internet, and no worries. Being able to disconnect from the real world is a beautiful thing.
