In every story, there is a central conflict that the protagonist must solve. This conflict can revolve around the protagonist’s friends, family, or the choices they make. However, in these short stories, the conflict is fixated on something much darker…murder. There are three short stories that demonstrate this dark subject: Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl, Just Lather, That’s All by Hernando Tellez, and Gentlemen, Your Verdict by Michael Bruce. In the works: Lamb to the Slaughter, Just Lather, That’s All and Gentlemen, Your Verdict each protagonist has a similar conflict they are faced with. Each problem relates to murder, each protagonist must make an important decision, and each conflict is not completely resolved. In the short story Lamb to the Slaughter, a woman murders her husband after she finds out that he is leaving her for another woman. This story demonstrates a crime of passion for the reason that she loved her husband so much, she could not bear to let him live his life with another woman. The jury is deciding if the captain of a sinking submarine was justified to kill several members of his crew in order to save the lives of five others. The murder in this story was commited by poisoning multiple glasses of whiskey except for six saved for the married men of the crew and Captain Oram. Similar to Lamb to the Slaughter, the murder is described in a single scentence with not a great amount of detail. This crime was commited out of sacrifice for the ship only had enough air to save five men. Captain Oram decided to save the men with families, ultimately killing himself as well. This is the immense decision that Captain Oram had to make: Die as one or save a few? There is no right answer to this question, as it depends on an individual’s judgment and morals.
