There were three battles of the war of 1812 that had a significant impact; one of those battles was the Battle of Lake Erie. Also known as the Battle of Put-in-Bay, this battle was fought on September 10, 1813, off the coast of Ohio. Nine vessels of the United States Army captured and defeated six of Great Britain’s Royal Navy vessels. This event secured the Northwest Territory, and opened supply lines. During this battle the ship called the Lawrence was badly damaged, and most of the crew was either dead or badly wounded. Oliver Hazard Perry, the American Commander transferred to another ship called the Niagara, where he continued the battle and came out victorious. Commodore Perry wrote his famous report to General William Henry Harrison: “We have met the enemy and they are ours: two ships, two brigs, one schooner, and one sloop.” This gave the Americans control of the lake for the remainder of the war, because of this the Americans were able to recover Detroit and later win the Battle of Thames. The battle of the Thames was an important land battle of the war of 1812. Since the early 1800s Chief Tecumseh had tried to form a confederation of Indian tribes to attempt to stop white Americans from seizing Indian land. Because Tecumseh had been killed in the battle, so too was his confederation. They couldn’t survive without a strong leader. For the next several years’ decades Indians in the old northwest signed treaties giving up claims to their land that they once owned.
