The U.S. did not experience a new birth of freedom between 1865 and 1929, as minority groups like African-Americans and immigrants were still tormented and taken advantage of, and workers were still treated poorly.
The lack of freedom can be seen in the first source I have chosen, “Lands of the South be Divided”. Francis L. Cardozo was a black man that graduated from University and returned to South Carolina after the Civil War. Yes, he was a free man according to the law, but it’s apparent that he was not truly a free man. “What is the main cause of the prosperity of the North? It is because every man has his own farm and is free and independent. Let the lands of the South be similarly divided” (Lands of the South be Divided). Black men were free by title, but the system was still built heavily in favor of white men. All the land was owned by whites and there was no way for African-Americans to do what they really wanted

They came to America because of the economic opportunity that was present, although living the American Dream would not be an easy task. It was difficult for them to find jobs, and if they did manage to find one, their employer would likely take advantage of them. Not only that, but they were constantly discriminated against, and underwent physical and verbal abuse. America was meant to be a “melting pot” of all kinds of cultures and races, which was certainly not what most in the country wanted at the time. “…the immigrant has not been free, and the Anglo-Saxon element is guilty of just what every dominant race is guilty of in every European country; the imposition of its own culture upon the minority peoples” (Bourne Trans-National America).
