Chapter III opens with an excerpt from another comic, Tales from the Black Freighter. Scenes from the comic are merged with an old newsstand man and the young teen who’s reading the Comic. We then see that the Nova Express newspaper is late to arrive, and the redheaded doomsayer comes to buy a copy of the New Frontiersman. The constant appearance of this man reaffirms my thought of him being important in some way that we have not discovered. Then we read more lines of the Black Freighter, where a sailor has been marooned and surrounded by the corpses of his fellow crewmen. We then cut to Dr. Manhattan and Laurie in the bedroom. Laurie then comes to realize that there are two Dr. Manhattans in bed with her, and another working in another room. Laurie is fed up with Jon and can’t take being with him anymore and leaves. Jon then begins to get ready for a television interview.
Next, we see Janey Slater is getting interviewed by the Nova Express about Jon leaving her for Laurie Jupiter, who she says was only sixteen years old at the time. Which makes their relationship seem even stranger. Distraught Laurie seeks out Dan Dreiberg to help comfort her. Before Jon’s interview we learn his real last

Hollis describes the tensions at the height of the McCarthy era. The masked heroes had to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and were all forced to reveal their identities. However, Hooded Justice refused to testify and disappeared. As Hooded Justice disappears as does strong man Rolf Müller which raises the question to if they were the same man. Without villains to fight the dressing up to fight crime became pointless. By the time, Dr. Manhattan became a hero in the 60s the rest of the heroes became has-beens and were no longer needed. However, with Dr. Manhattan came a new breed of masked heroes. This frees the old Nite Owl to open his own repair
