The last name Gutierrez originated in Spain, which means “battle sword,” and that dates back in the 5th century. For myself having this last name has both negative and positive aspects connected to it. My family is a very extended and diverse group of individuals that have many layers to them. Regarding generational patterns that were passed down through the generations, my father’s children are almost the exception to a lot of it. An area of dysfunction that was passed down was alcoholism from generations further back than my grandparents. In Mexico, where a majority of my family lives, it is not common to talk about their feelings and discuss family problems. A way that they deal with their emotions instead of talking it out is by drinking.
