The Field Manual that covers guard is FM 22-6. When performing guard duty, one of the main things you need to know are your general orders which are; I will guard everything within the limits of my post and quit my post only when properly relieved. I will obey my special orders and perform all my duties in a military manner. I will report violations of my special orders, emergencies, and anything not covered in my instructions to the Commander of the Relief. There are two types of orders you can recieve, general and special orders. When you are at your guard post you are responsible for your post and all government property in view. If you sleep on duty you are subject to Court Martial under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. When you are on guard you have certain duties to perform. You must memorize, understand, and comply with the general orders for guards. You must also understand and comply with any special orders applying to your particular post.
