During the introduction, the essay highlighted the importance of family and the role of a Latina mother in immigration. A family’s ability to adapt to their new environment in a foreign land depends heavily upon the mother figure in the family. There is no denying the crucial role a mother plays in the successful transition of a family and how well they respond to change. As the essay states, the work of a Latina mother includes, “ to nurture the next generation and to communicate to them the important traits of their own cultural heritage” (Mendoza). Essentially, during a child’s upbringing, the moral values and cultural beliefs instilled in them are directly influenced by the mother in Latin cultures. In a way, a child’s cultural identity and sense of belonging can stem directly from their mothers. A task such as this is the epitome of the phrase “easier said than done”. This quote also gives a sense of how much responsibility Latina mothers have to shoulder. In addition, life as an immigrant, through struggle and hardship can have a profound bonding effect on a family. Latina mothers and their commitment, endurance and resilience to try and keep their families together and whole, is something I deeply respect.

It provides a sense of belonging, protection, inclusion and access to all of the opportunities available to a citizen. Being a citizen comes with all the responsibilities and the rights afforded to a citizen. For example, the right to vote is a civic duty many immigrants value because it is an opportunity to have their voices heard, however, things such as lack of knowledge on candidates and language barriers are high deterrents to voting.
