Laverne and Shirley debuted in 1976. It was a hit for most of us as it related to what it was really like to live with someone who had opposite viewpoints, be female and single. I guess in many ways, it was the female's version of The Odd Couple with characters, Oscar and Felix. It ranked number 3 in the Nielsen ratings in its first season.

If you are unfamiliar with the show, it was about two girls living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the 1950s and '60s. They worked at a brewery together, they lived together... they shared a lot of things together. However, Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeny were two very different people.

About Penny Marshall

Laverne or better known as Penny Marshall was born in NYC (October 15) and spent much of her career somewhere in the film industry. Her father, Tony Marshall, her brother, Garry and sister (Ronni) were all involved in the business. It was only natural, I suppose - although, she could have been an instructor like her mom.

From acting to directing, Marshall has stayed busy. Her first direction was Jumpin' Jack Flash, which featured Whoopi Goldberg. I enjoyed it, however I don't think I knew that Penny Marshall directed it... did you? Oh well, in either case, she did and it was at the suggestion of her friend, Whoopi that she even contemplate the idea of directing a film.
